How players aged 14-16+ can transition to professional football

Arsene Wenger - Former Arsenal Manager

For soccer players (aged 14-16+) aspiring to play professional in Europe, reaching that goal involves focused training, discipline, and strategic steps to develop and showcase their talent.

Here’s a guide on what you should focus on:

1. Refine Technical Skills

  • Master core skills: Continue improving dribbling, passing, shooting, and ball control. Practicing daily helps make these skills second nature.

  • Work on weak foot and versatility: Professional players often use both feet effectively and are adaptable to different positions. Developing these skills early provides a competitive edge.

We provide small-group, individual and online training services to players aged 12-18+ which are based on best-practices of Europe's top academy programs. I worked as a North American coach and scout for EPL club Wolves for eight years and has also completed study visits to professional club academy programs in Spain, Portugal and Italy.

2. Train with High-Quality Coaches

  • Seek a reputable academy or club: At this age, being in a competitive, well-coached environment is essential. Look for a club with experienced coaches, exposure to high-level competition, and a track record of developing professional players.

  • Be coachable: Listen to feedback and actively work on improving. Coaches value players who show dedication to learning and improving.

3. Play in Competitive Leagues and Tournaments

  • Join a challenging league: Competing against high-level players helps improve skills and understand how to play against stronger opponents.

  • Attend tournaments and showcases: These events often attract scouts and offer exposure to professional teams. Performing well can create early opportunities for visibility.

With our network of contacts in Europe, we are able to place players directly on club teams in Europe for full seasons (in Spain) and fully integrate our players into academy training groups at other professional clubs in Europe. I have recently returned from a visit to our UK partner club Larne FC where several of our U16 players have been training with Larne's U18 academy squad.

Larne are a full-time club in Northern Ireland who have qualified for the group stages of the UEFA Conference League.

4. Develop Tactical Awareness and Soccer IQ

  • Study the game: Watch professional matches, study player movements, and learn different formations. Understanding tactics and positioning is critical.

  • Focus on decision-making: Practice drills that require making quick choices under pressure to improve reaction time and on-field intelligence.

Game understanding is the main performance area that prevents North American players from succeeding in Europe. Academy players in Europe receive match analysis support from a team of full-time analysts who provide performance feedback on every training session and game. I currently provide match analyst services to a select group of players and I am happy to expand this service to more players who aspire to play professional football in Europe.

5. Prioritize Physical Fitness and Conditioning

  • Build strength and endurance: At 14, start working on foundational fitness through strength, flexibility, and agility training. This helps prevent injuries and prepares for the physical demands of the game.

  • Stay in shape year-round: Consistent conditioning and fitness will help maintain peak performance, so find a fitness routine that complements soccer training.

The modern game places increased physical demands on players in terms of distance covered (stamina), strength, power and the high number of high-intensity sprints.

We provide several of our players with access to the strength and conditioning program of a professional club in the UK which enables our players to develop their physical attributes to the same levels as academy players in the UK. This service is delivered online and players can sign up for this program here

6. Build Mental Toughness and Resilience

  • Stay motivated and disciplined: The path to professionalism is challenging and requires dedication. Set short-term goals to stay motivated and track progress.

  • Learn to handle pressure: Mental toughness is crucial in competitive soccer. Practice staying calm under pressure, handling setbacks positively, and staying focused on improvement.

7. Seek Exposure to Scouts and Professional Pathways

  • Attend tryouts and showcase events: Many clubs and academies hold open tryouts or scouting events. Performing well here can lead to recruitment or further exposure.

  • Consider international academies: Some players explore joining academies with strong connections to professional leagues (such as European academies) for advanced training and opportunities.

8. Maintain Academic and Personal Discipline

  • Balance soccer with academics: Many clubs value disciplined players who manage both school and soccer well. A balanced approach helps with long-term focus and options.

  • Maintain a positive attitude and be a team player: Coaches and scouts look for players who are coachable, respectful, and have good sportsmanship.

9. Focus on Nutrition and Recovery

  • Eat well and stay hydrated: A balanced diet is crucial for performance and recovery. Focus on eating enough protein, carbohydrates, healthy fats, and drinking plenty of water.

  • Prioritize recovery: Sleep, rest, and stretching are vital to avoid overuse injuries, especially with the increased physical demands of advanced training.

10. Network and Seek Mentorship

  • Find a mentor: A mentor, such as a coach or experienced player, can provide guidance, advice, and support to navigate the competitive soccer world.

  • Network with other players and coaches: Developing relationships within the soccer community can open doors to opportunities and support development.

For a young player, patience and dedication are critical. Every step you take should contribute to reaching a higher level, so that you are obsessed with continuous improvement.
